Chickens, Pianos, Flutes, Castors and Casters

Finn and Leon at the Chicken Coop

Finn and Leon went over to the nice people’s house to see some chickens. But when they got there, the chickens weren’t there. Where did the chickens go? Neither Finn nor Leon knew and when they went to ask the nice people, the nice people were either watching TV or playing the piano.

Finn and Leon on the piano

Ignoring the TV but amazed at the site and sound of the piano, they jumped up to get a closer look. The nice young lady playing the piano was playing the piano in a very nice young ladylike fashion. They were enthralled. But as enthralling as the sound of the piano was, they started to wonder how a piano was moved. It seemed pretty heavy. Much heavier than a flute.

The nice young lady playing the piano overheard them talking about how a piano was moved and she told them, “it’s on casters.” And even though she said, “casters”, Finn and Leon heard “castors”. And, as everyone knows (everyone except Finn and Leon), “castors” and “casters” are not the same thing. And neither of them have anything to do with a flute. And even though a flute needs oil, and oil can be made from the beans of the castor plant, you probably shouldn’t use castor oil on a flute.

Finn and Leon thanked the nice young lady for telling them about castors (even though she didn’t tell them about castors. She told them about casters) and they left the nice people’s house.

Finn and Leon with the castor plants

As they were walking along, talking about castors, they came across some plants with reddish stocks and big leaves. As they stood there, staring at these interesting plants, a nice passerby told them that the plants were Castor Bean plants. “Castor plants”, shouted Finn and Leon. “That must be where the casters come from for the piano!”

So they stood there to see if they could determine which part of the plant would be used to make the casters for a piano. No luck. There was nothing there that looked at all like the casters on the piano. But they did notice some interesting things that looked like they could be beans. They each got closer and noticed that the beans were just about the right size to blow through a flute. Kinda like a pea shooter. “Maybe we could shoot the beans at some chickens.” mumbled Leon. But Finn reminded him that the chickens had left.

Oh well.

The Star Trek Convention

Finn mentioned to Leon that he had never trekked out to see the stars. And he was wondering what it was like to see the stars. Leon, being such an accomplished traveler said that seeing star trek was a lot of fun and that he should do it.

As is the case with most of the ideas that Finn and Leon had, they weren’t quite sure how to get started with their trek to see the stars, or their “star trek” as Leon put it. Although Finn wasn’t sure what that meant. He started to wonder about what it meant, but was quickly distracted by the excitement of seeing something he had never seen before!

A friendly passerby overheard their conversation and suggested that if they wanted to see a Star Trek convention, they should check for information on the internet, or the “web”. They weren’t sure if they heard him correctly and thought that he had said “interweb” and something about a yahoo crawling on the interweb with a google, or a gaggle, or a giggle or some such thing. That made absolutely no sense to either Finn or Leon. They couldn’t figure out what spiders had to do with it. Maybe the spiders were now connecting their webs together like condominiums and that is what they were calling an “interweb”.

The idea of spiders connecting their webs together into an interweb sparked a thought in Leon’s mind. He remembered seeing a lot of spider webs somewhere in a place kinda far from where they were at the time. He also remembered that it was quite green, with lots of plants and stuff.

Having no clear idea as to where they were really going or what they were going to do when they got there, other than see the spider’s interwebs and trek out to see stars, they started walking. A family of people saw them walking along the road and offered to take them to where they were going. Finn and Leon tried their best to explain where they were headed, but were SO excited about it, that they jumbled their words all up, got tongue tied and tripped on the curb. So the family helped them out and put them in their car.

The family’s destination was a camp site near the Smith and Morehouse reservoir. When the car came to a halt at the campsite, both Finn and Leon jumped out and started running around to find the spider’s interweb. But it was too dark to really see the webs, since the sun had already gone down. So they looked up into the sky and saw stars! They both agreed that this wasn’t a conventional trek to see stars, but it was fun!

An elevator ride

In their quest for adventures, Finn and Leon found this funny little room with a set of sliding doors and lots of buttons. Leon, the more traveled of the two, spoke up and said that he thought it was an Elven Vader. Finn wasn’t sure if that was true and asked if an Elven Vader was anything like a Darth Vader. Leon didn’t think so.

As they stood there in the hall, looking at this little room with the set of sliding doors, a passerby heard them talking and informed them that they were looking at an elevator and that it had nothing to do with Darth Vader or Elves or even Uncle Owen or Aunt Beru. They thanked the nice passerby and continued standing there, staring at the little room.

They stared so long that the doors closed. But they were patient (mainly because they were confused as to what would happen next) and waited, and the doors reopened. And as they did reopen, Finn and Leon decided to go in the little room. But they weren’t sure which one should go in first. Leon said, “You’re shorter, you go in first.” But Finn said, “You’re older, you go in first.” As they continued to argue back and forth, the same passerby passed by again and said, “The one closest to the door should go in first and hold the elevator door open button for everyone else who wants to get on.”

“OK”, they said.

A car ride

As much as Leon has traveled, you would think that he would be more experienced with the use of seat belts. But, no.

This is how they started while riding in the car:

Strapped securely in the car seat

And this is how they ended up after being in the car for just a few minutes:

Unstrapped and upside down

They found some rocks, tiny rocks

The Cone King wasn’t any help with Finn and Leon’s search for rocks, tiny rocks, but they were able to find some on their own!

Finn and Leon found some rocks, tiny rocks!

The Cone King

Finn and Leon were meandering in the parking garage, looking for rocks, tiny rocks, when they came across something that they weren’t expecting. But it’s important for me to tell you that Finn and Leon don’t have any expectations of any kind. And since they don’t have any expectations, everything they come across is something they weren’t expecting. But this unexpected something was unexpectedly surprising: a king. A Cone King, to be more precise.

Leon, The Cone King and Finn

Neither Finn nor Leon knew exactly how they knew that it was the Cone King, there was just something about the cone that suggested royalty. Perhaps the orange glow. But royal or not, the Cone King wouldn’t help them find any tiny rocks. So they kept looking.

Riding the bus to a meeting

Neither Finn nor Leon had ever been to a meeting before, so they decided to go and attend one. They didn’t seem to care that there were so many different kinds of meetings that they could attend. Their knowledge and experience (the same thing?) about meetings was so limited that “a meeting” was just “a meeting”. People gathered together and met.

The first big question they had to answer was how to get to the meeting. Leon, being quite the traveler, said, “Bus! We can take a bus to a meeting!”. Finn, the lucky one, agreed.

The next big question to be answered was where to get on the bus. Finn thought for a bit and considered that buses both start and stop. And since it might be kind of dangerous to attempt getting on a bus while it was started, Finn thought that stop would be easier. So he told Leon that they could get on the bus while it was stopped. But where? Leon just started mumbling the words, “bus”, “start”, and “stop”. He kept saying them over and over until he said, “bus, stop!” rather loudly. Finn heard that and asked, “did you say, ‘bus stop’?”. “Yes”, Leon said. “That’s it!” said Finn. “We’ll get on a bus at a bus stop!”.

So they did.

Neither Finn nor Leon knew when they should get off the bus in order to arrive at the meeting. But a friendly gentleman sitting near them said that there was a meeting room on the 18th Floor of a building downtown and that they had a good chance of attending a meeting there and then told them where to get off the bus. They thanked the nice gentleman (their Mother taught them to be polite) and went to the building they were told about.

Walking until they found the building, riding the elevator until they got to the 18th Floor, sitting at the really nice meeting table in the really nice meeting room on the really nice meeting chairs, all they could wonder was, “when is a meeting going to start?”.

Hello world!

“Hello world!” That’s the default text of the “first post” that is created when wordpress is initially installed and it fits this blog well. Hi, my name is Veestn Rhasp, but my friends call me “Duckie”. I started this blog today after meeting two, um, well, um, things. These two things look like they were made from socks. But I don’t mind and in fact, that’s one of the things that makes them so lovable! And after all, I’m made from something like rubber.

These two sock friends that I met today are named Finn and Leon. Finn is shorter than Leon. And Leon is taller than Finn. I’m glad it works out that way, because it makes it easier to tell which one is which. Although there are many other differences to how they look, I prefer telling them apart by their height.

Finn, the shorter of the two, is Irish and related to the Lucky Charms guy. He loves chocolate. You can tell because there’s some on his ear. Finn also makes a good duster.

Leon, the taller of the two, is a world traveler. His favorite place is New York City. He did try out for the New York Knicks, but did not make the team due to a severe head injury.

I’ll do my best to keep you informed of what Finn and Leon are doing and the places they visit. Thanks for reading!

Friends on the first day they met: Finn, Leon and Duckie.
