Posted on May 30th, 2011 by duckie As Finn and Leon made their way back from where they were to where they’re weren’t, it started to rain. Actually, it just continued to rain. It had been raining for quite some time. “I like the rain”, said Finn. “Yes, I like it too, but it’s very wet”, said Leon. “It’s so wet that I’m wet, too”, he added. Finn agreed that Leon was getting very wet. And Finn noticed that he was getting very wet, too.
“I’ve heard that umbrellas are dry”, said Leon. “Maybe we could stand next to an umbrella and it would help us get dry”, he added. So they did. Finn and Leon stood next to an umbrella to try and get dry. But one umbrella didn’t seem to be enough to get them dry, cuz they were still wet. So they started gathering a bunch of umbrellas. And still no luck, they were as wet as ever.
“Ah well”, sighed Finn, “I like the rain”.
These umbrellas don't seem to work
Posted on May 26th, 2011 by duckie It seems as though Finn and Leon are still in the habit of disappearing for days, even weeks at a time. But I’ve managed to find them, again! As you know, there has been a great deal of rain in the past month and it has carried a lot of things away. Away down the drains. And away down the streams. And away down the rivers. And away, away, away! Well, Finn and Leon were no exception.
No sooner had they landed from being whirled away around the world while hanging from an umbrella, they were whisked away down a river. Fortunately, they had both let go of the umbrella and somehow managed to land back in it after it had turned over. At first, Leon was all flustered that they were going to get wet from all the rain. Finn, not at all flustered, agreed with Leon that yes, they were going to get wet from all the rain. After all, an umbrella doesn’t do much good to protect you from the rain unless you’re hanging below it. And then Finn noticed that the umbrella was keeping them from falling in the water and getting even more wet! He mentioned this fact to Leon, who just said, “hrrmphh”. And then they both laid back and relaxed in the umbrella while they floated wherever the water would take them.
Floating around next to shore in their umbrella-boat
At one point in time while floating around, they came really close to the shore, but they were both asleep and didn’t notice. Ah well, maybe they’ll come back again someday.
Posted on May 4th, 2011 by duckie I was asked the other day where Finn and Leon have been. It seems that no one has seen them for a while. And, coincidentally, just after I was asked that, Finn and Leon showed up! Well, actually, they showed down. It seems that they’ve been “up” for quite a while on a rather unexpected tour of the world.
As they came down, I asked them what they had been doing and why they were hanging from an umbrella. The story I got from them was that Leon had been playing with this umbrella just as the wind started to blow. Finn hurried and grabbed on to try and keep the umbrella, with Leon clinging to it, from flying away. But alas, Finn was not heavy enough to keep the umbrella on the ground. So away they went! But now they’re back. We hope. They’ve both been clinging to the umbrella for so long that they can’t seem to move their arms or legs. So it may be a while before they detach from the umbrella. We’ll see if the wind picks up before they let go.
Finn and Leon hanging on for dear life!
Posted on April 10th, 2011 by duckie As Finn was lying there, thinking about nothing in particular, Leon said something. “What did you just say?”, asked Finn. “I can hear a funny noise.”, replied Leon.
“Oh”, said Finn.
Finn continued to lie there, thinking about nothing in particular. Leon said it again, “I can hear a funny noise.”
“Oh”, said Finn.
“Don’t you hear it?”, asked Leon.
“Yup”, replied Finn.
“Don’t you think we should figure out what it is?”, asked Leon. Finn, not really wanting to get up from his comfortable prone position, reluctantly agreed to get up and go with Leon to find out what the funny noise was.
They wandered into the bathroom where Leon thought the noise might be coming from. The funny noise was the sound the dripping water was making on the floor under the toilet tank. Finn said to Leon, “I’m OK with the noise, it’s a nice soundtrack to the cool designs the water is making on the floor.” And with that comment, Finn started to head back to his comfortable lounge-place. Leon grabbed him and said, “We’re going to fix it!”.
“Oh boy.”, sighed Finn.
Finn and Leon fixing the leak in the Toilet. They hope.
Posted on April 3rd, 2011 by duckie Finn saw the garbage can sitting on the street next to the curb and got the idea that it would be a nice gesture to bring it up to the house. Leon agreed.
So Leon grabbed the handles and Finn pushed from the other side. Even though the can was empty, they still struggled with it and had gone about 10 feet when Leon wondered if Finn was really pushing. So he let go of the handles, which caused the can to stand back up straight, and climbed on top to see if Finn was helping. What he saw was Finn, lying down on the job, no less!
Finn, lying down under the job
“Hey, what are you doing there lying down on the job?!”, yelled Leon. “It was your suggestion to move the garbage can and I seem to be the only one doing the work!, he added. Just then, a nice passerby, who had been watching their efforts to move the can, told Leon that Finn had been helping, but that when Leon let go of the handles, which caused the can to stand back up, the can landed right on top of Finn. “Oh, I didn’t realize that”, said Leon. So Leon apologized to Finn.
Finn didn’t get mad at Leon for squishing him with the garbage can or for accusing him of lying down on the job. He just smiled and said, “That’s OK, it’s just the way I like it. But if you could hurry and get the can off of me, I’d like that, too.”

Posted on March 21st, 2011 by duckie Finn and Leon were standing in a garage and wondering how they got there. They were also wondering how they were going to get out. All the doors were closed. Leon was all nervous that they were going to be stuck in the garage for days and days and days. Finn didn’t mind, though; there were lots of really cool things to see in this particular garage. So Finn let Leon do all the worrying and he just wandered around looking at things.
After about a week of looking at things in the garage, Leon thought that maybe he found the button that would open the garage door. So he shouted at Finn, but Finn didn’t hear him. So he shouted again, and Finn still didn’t hear him. So finally, Leon walked over to Finn and pulled off the ear protectors that Finn had been wearing. “These are really cool!”, shouted Finn. “When I’m wearing ‘em, I can’t hear a thing!”, he added. “I noticed”, said Leon. Then he proceeded to tell Finn about the button he found. “That sounds really cool. Let’s push it and see what happens.”, said Finn.
So Leon pushed the button. As soon as he pushed it, Finn wished that he was still wearing the ear protectors, cuz the garage door opener made a horrible sound; but it didn’t open the door. “Hmmm”, said Leon, “I wonder what that means.” “I think it means that it made a horrible noise but didn’t open the garage door.”, replied Finn. “You’re probably right, Finn.”, said Leon.
As they stood there next to the button, Finn told Leon about a cool ladder that he had seen leaning against the wall. Leon said that ladders were good for climbing up to high things. “Remember the time I climbed up on the roof to look for the frisbee?”, asked Leon. “You’re right!”, said Finn, “maybe there’s a frisbee stuck in the garage door opener and that’s why it didn’t open!” “Let’s use the ladder and look!”, added Leon.
So they did.
 I don't see a frisbee up here
Finn, after climbing up on the ladder, decided that he would be brave and jump up on the garage door opener. After all, he was excited about seeing a frisbee. But, there wasn’t a frisbee. There was just a broken gear thingy and a really cool black chain that was hanging down. So Finn decided to play on it like a swing.
 This chain thing is fun!
As Finn hung there on the chain, he said to Leon, “You know that the door still isn’t open, right?”
Posted on March 12th, 2011 by duckie Finn and Leon were walking in the snow next to a cinder block wall when they came across something they weren’t expecting. There, in the snow were a bunch of rubber ducks!. There was also an egg (is silly putty considered a rubber duck in the making?) and an orange guy. Finn and Leon were excited that they had found these creatures and immediately jumped right into the middle of them all.
Leon looked around at all of the ducks, the maybe soon-to-be-duck and the orange guy and shouted, “Aren’t you guys supposed to be in a row!?”
Finn didn’t think so and that’s what he said to Leon. The ducks didn’t say anything, they just smiled and sat there.
Leon looked around again at all the ducks, the maybe soon-to-be duck and the orange guy and thought that if they weren’t in a row, maybe they were in some other significant pattern that had deep cosmic meaning.
Finn didn’t think so and that’s what he said to Leon. The ducks still didn’t say anything, they just continued to smile and sit there.
“Let’s get out the computers and the protractors and the laser measuring devices and the GPS units and the satellite photos and all that other technical, scientific stuff and find the significant pattern that all of these ducks, the maybe soon-to-be duck and that strange-looking orange guy are in!”, exclaimed Leon. “The significant, cosmic pattern has to be there, I just know it!”, he added. “Why else would we have come across such an interesting configuration of creatures in the snow next to this cinder block wall?”
Finn just sat there with the ducks, the maybe soon-to-be duck, the orange guy and Leon and quietly said, “why don’t we just sit here and enjoy their company?”
“Oh. I didn’t think of that. Yes, let’s do that.” agreed Leon.
So they did.
And that was the most significant part of that entire experience. Well, that and the fact that a group of ducks climbed up on Finn’s head and stood there; in a row.
Scattered about in no particular order
Posted on March 5th, 2011 by duckie The pedals never appeared and it had been several days, so Leon finally decided that they were just going to stay hidden. Finn, patiently waiting on the ground, was excited that Leon was finally going to jump down and continue the search for a bike.
So they continued on their search.
And searching as they continued, they came across a really cool-looking bike! It was blue and it had pictures of people on it! Leon was SO excited to see this bike that he ran right over and climbed up. Finn still wasn’t sure about it, but he admitted that this particular bike seemed to be OK.
 We found one!
As Finn continued to stand there next to the cool bike, he got more and more comfortable with the idea of going for a ride. Leon suggested that he climb up and get in the front passenger compartment. Finn thought that this sounded like a good idea and he climbed into the front passenger compartment. Now they were both ready to go for a ride!
If only Leon could reach the pedals and the handle bars!
Posted on February 28th, 2011 by duckie Leon had been trying to get the red bike to actually move. But after a few days of not getting anywhere, he decided that Finn was probably right and this wasn’t a bike after all. Actually, he just thought the pedals were broken. So he hoped that someone would come by and fix the pedals and then he hopped down. With both he and Finn back on the ground, they continued their search. And they soon saw another bike!
From down on the ground, this bike looked like it didn’t have any pedals, either. Undaunted, Leon climbed up on the seat to see if maybe the pedals on this bike would be easier to see from up there. As he stood there, he tried REALLY hard to see pedals. But it didn’t seem to matter how hard he tried, the pedals just couldn’t be seen. Finn just waited on the ground.
“I know!”, exclaimed Leon. “The pedals are locked so that no one can steal the bike! Yeah, that’s it!” he added. Finn just waited on the ground.
While Finn was patiently waiting on the ground, Leon spent a day hoping that standing there on the seat in just a certain way would unlock the pedals so that he could see them. Alas, it did not work. And Finn just waited on the ground.
At least this bike isn't stuck in concrete!
Finn continued to wait for Leon to figure out that the pedals must have been taken by the owner and that they wouldn’t come back until the owner did. Besides, this bike looked like it was too heavy to pedal very far. Leon continued to stand on the bike, waiting for the pedals to appear.
Posted on February 26th, 2011 by duckie Leon was talking one day about a cool bike he had seen many months ago. Finn, trying really hard to listen intently to what Leon was saying, couldn’t figure out what a bike was. So he asked Leon, “what’s a bike?” Leon was amazed that Finn didn’t know what a bike was. So he started to explain to Finn that a bike was a cool metal thing with two round things that a person can ride on to go places. “Oh, that makes it perfectly clear!” said Finn. “How is that different from walking?” he asked.
Leon said that it was very different from walking because you could go much faster and it was a lot of fun. Finn didn’t think that going faster sounded like much fun at all. But even with Leon’s amazingly detailed explanation of what a bike was, he still didn’t have a clue.
So Leon decided to show Finn what a bike looked like. Finn agreed to walk around with Leon to look for a bike, but he made it very clear that he wasn’t too keen on the idea of actually getting on one. “That’s OK”, said Leon, “Once you see a bike, you’ll want to jump right on and go for a ride!”
As they were walking around town, Leon thought for sure that they would see many, many bikes. But what he didn’t take into consideration was the fact that it was still wintertime and most people didn’t ride bikes when it was cold. As you will probably recall, Finn and Leon don’t feel the cold and they have no idea what coats are.
But after walking around for a few days, Leon finally saw something that he was sure was a bike. He waltzed over there, all proud that he had finally found one and climbed up to have a ride. Finn said, “Well, it’s made of metal and it has at least two round things, but I don’t know that you can go anywhere on it. It seems to be stuck in the ground.” Leon agreed that the bike wasn’t working like he thought it would. So he climbed down and they kept looking.
Are all bikes stuck in concrete?
